Imperata cylindrica 'Red Baron' adds the vertical colour that you need in certain situations.  Its spreading habit is slightly annoying, but its beautiful colour combination and graceful look are worth it. The situation here is late morning through to afternoon sun, and it seems to be doing brilliantly.

Hiding hydrants, water works, cable boxes and other hardware is an age old problem. Using Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus' combined with crushed stone works for this purpose.  Miscanthus is quick growing, covers extensively, and can be cut or trampled easily should work or an emergency arise.  Cutting them in October also leaves a clean look in the snow.

The sequence above shows the amazing process by which this bee dutifully pollinated each iris blossom.  There are a couple of these types of bee in the iris at any one time, and mid-morning seems to be the favourite time of day.

Summer arrives...

One month later, we have experienced cool weather which preserves the youth of spring a little longer. Ginny's rock is disappearing, as is the Buxus.  Most striking is Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus', a grand grass that reaches two metres from ground level every year. This grass is easily maintained.  As the clump increases in diameter, you can trim the edges or split it in order to reduce its size.
